Memorial University has offered geography courses since 1946, achieving departmental status in 1960. The graduate program launched in 1970 with MA and MSc degrees, followed by the introduction of a PhD program in 1992. We aim to cultivate curiosity about global geography through teaching and research, equipping students with analytical methods to investigate geographical questions and effectively share their discoveries.
Our graduate research spans multiple disciplines including climatology, cultural/historical/economic geography, GIS, geomorphology, Quaternary studies, regional development, remote sensing, and resource management. Newfoundland and Labrador's unique environments offer diverse research prospects. The province's coastal position enables climate studies and examination of past climate impacts on landscapes. The Atlantic region's socioeconomic characteristics present opportunities to investigate population trends, sustainable resource use, and rural growth. The area also provides excellent conditions for coastal and marine environment research.
