The Ethnomusicology MA and PhD programs at Memorial University present distinctive pathways for those passionate about investigating music as a cultural phenomenon. These programs deliver comprehensive training in modern ethnomusicological theories and methodologies, alongside immersive explorations of ethnographic and historical music research. Memorial University's Ethnomusicology graduate studies bridge disciplines, combining offerings from both the School of Music and Folklore Department. Students gain hands-on experience through media production courses in radio and video. Based at the Research Centre for the Study of Music, Media, and Place (MMaP) - home to a Sundanese gamelan degung - the program attracts globally recognized scholars through its lecture series, residency programs, and international conferences. Students frequently engage with St. John's thriving traditional music community.

PhD – This doctoral program prepares scholars for academic careers or public sector cultural leadership roles.
