The program supports exploration across ethnomusicology's broad geographical and intellectual spectrum. We actively promote performance practice and interdisciplinary connections with fields like anthropology, regional studies, sociology, and linguistics, while fostering cross-pollination within music disciplines including composition, theory, and music history.
Our approach maintains equilibrium between ethnomusicology's varied dimensions, giving equal emphasis to performance, musical notation, analytical theory, and socio-historical contexts. We maintain strong partnerships with the School of Music's theory, musicology, and composition departments, while also engaging with University-wide Area Studies programs. Our mission is to inspire students with our passion for global musical traditions and to cultivate innovative, thoughtful scholarship that prepares graduates to make meaningful contributions to academic discourse, pedagogy, and the preservation of diverse musical cultures. Though our ethnomusicology community is compact, our collaborative environment thrives with energy and produces exceptional scholarly work.
