Marine biology explores ocean life, examining how marine species behave and interact with their surroundings. The marine biology program offers hands-on learning experiences through laboratory work, field excursions, and project-based classes. Students can dive into practical studies at the Bonne Bay Marine Station or pursue independent research projects at the Ocean Sciences Centre.
The Marine Biology joint major is co-managed by the Department of Ocean Sciences and the Department of Biology. The curriculum includes foundational courses in oceanography and biology, supplemented by electives in other scientific disciplines.
Annually, we host engaging field courses at the Bonne Bay Aquarium and Research Station, situated in Gros Morne National Park along the province's western coast. This premier facility supports marine ecology research and education, featuring labs, vessels, a resource library, aquariums, a multimedia theater, and on-site housing.
Near St. John’s, overlooking Logy Bay, the Ocean Sciences Centre (OSC) is a cutting-edge research and teaching hub just 10 minutes from campus. Equipped with wet and analytical laboratories, the OSC facilitates studies in cold-ocean ecosystems, deep-sea processes, aquaculture, biological oceanography, marine ecology, physiology, and biotechnology.
