The field of Earth sciences covers all scientific research concerning our planet's structure and evolution, from analyzing surface rocks and soils to studying plate movements and deep Earth materials. While fieldwork remains crucial, modern geoscientists often employ advanced tools like ocean drilling ships, satellite data, precise geochemical and geophysical equipment, and cutting-edge electronic and laser microscopes.
Memorial University boasts one of Canada's most extensive and varied Earth sciences departments. Students can pursue a broad program or focus on specialized areas such as applied geophysics, environmental geoscience, petrology/tectonics/economic geology, or sedimentary basin studies.
Numerous employers visit our campus each year to recruit students for both summer employment and full-time careers. Many graduates go on to become certified geoscientists.
