Environmental geosciences equip earth-science students with interdisciplinary environmental interests the foundation to enter careers or advanced studies in geoscience fields tied to the environment, particularly focusing on water resources, water pollution and cleanup, oceanography, and climate shifts.
Numerous earth scientists work across multiple disciplines.
Geochemists examine the chemical composition of diverse elements ranging from surface and underground waters to molten rock and crustal formations; apply geochemical methods to uncover new mineral and energy deposits; and tackle environmental issues linked to resource extraction.
Biogeochemists explore how chemical elements circulate through Earth's systems, from vital nutrients like carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus to hazardous metals such as mercury and uranium.
Geobiologists focus on fossil studies, species distribution patterns, and the functional evolution of ancient organisms; investigate prehistoric ecosystems, life's historical development, and evolutionary processes; and help determine the chronological sequence of past geological and climatic occurrences.
Geophysicists quantify and analyze Earth's gravitational, magnetic, and electrical forces; capture and interpret seismic waves from both natural earthquakes and human activities; and map underground water sources and hydrocarbon deposits along with their potential leaks.
Students must complete high school for admission to the University of New Brunswick. They must complete six specific high school courses, according to their program of choice. UNB takes the overall average of the high school grades achieved in these six courses to calculate the student’s "minimum admission average", which is used to determine admissibility.
Course requirements:
Senior English Literature
Senior Math, including Pre-Calculus
1 other academic maths
Senior Chemistry
1 of Senior Physics, Senior Biology or Senior Geology (Senior Physics is required for entry into Health Sciences)
1 elective from group 1 or 2
Minimum admission average: 75% (The average marks in Pre-Calculus Math, Chemistry and the best other Science course must be at least 75 %.)
The University of New Brunswick accepts qualified applicants from all countries. Entry requirements may vary from country to country.
International students require the following English language proficiency minimum scores for direct entry into most academic programs: IELTS 6.5, TOEFL iBT 85, CAEL 60, or Pearson Vue Test 59.
