Earth Science explores Earth's formation, development, and structure (along with other planets) by examining physical, chemical, and biological processes.
Over the past four decades, the discipline has transformed dramatically with the realization that Earth's crust consists of shifting tectonic plates—expanding at mid-ocean ridges and subducting beneath mountain chains. Satellite-derived global datasets now enhance our comprehension of these mechanisms and their ecological consequences. While resource exploration remains a core focus for geoscientists, they increasingly address environmental challenges raised by both public and scientific communities.
Despite advances in computational, satellite, and laboratory technologies, fieldwork remains fundamental to Earth Science. This field offers diverse career paths, from lab and office roles to international fieldwork opportunities. Earth Scientists find employment with energy and mining firms exploring new reserves, environmental hazard management teams, and governmental geological agencies that provide summer field positions. Additional career options exist in consulting firms, academic institutions, and museums.
The University of Toronto Mississauga provides Specialist, Major, and Minor programs in Earth Sciences, plus an Environmental Geosciences Specialist program (HBSc) that fulfills Ontario's Professional Geologist certification requirements. These programs pursue four key objectives: (1) educating students about Earth's interconnected systems—particularly the relationships between the planet's solid surface and its oceans, atmosphere, and biosphere; (2) examining sustainable resource management; (3) investigating natural hazards like earthquakes, volcanic activity, and water pollution; and (4) developing strategies to adapt to environmental changes. This global, environmentally conscious approach attracts students interested in geological processes and their environmental impacts.
Qualified Earth Science Specialist students may apply for the competitive UTM Co-op Internship Program (UTMCIP), which includes professional preparation training and a 12- to 16-month paid work placement. UTMCIP typically extends degree completion to five years and involves additional program fees.
