Biology explores living organisms, examining their composition, processes, development, beginnings, adaptation, and geographical spread. Among scientific disciplines, biology likely has the strongest connection to our daily experiences. Each day brings new information about biological subjects like genetic modification, ecosystem preservation, environmental contaminants, health and immunity systems, group dynamics, and demographic changes.
Our curriculum provides exceptional hands-on research experiences for undergraduates, both in outdoor settings and laboratory environments. Students can participate in biological field studies at multiple locations including the Bonne Bay Marine Station adjacent to Gros Morne National Park, Terra Nova National Park in eastern Newfoundland, and Memorial University's Harlow Campus in England.
The biology program enables students to engage in laboratory investigations through initiatives like the Memorial Undergraduate Career Experience Program (MUCEP) and the NSERC Undergraduate Student Research Award (USRA) initiative.
Beyond standard major, minor, and honours tracks in biology, we provide combined degree options in:
biology and behavioural neuroscience (B.Sc. honours)
biochemistry and cell biology (B.Sc. honours)
biology and Earth sciences (B.Sc. honours)
biology and psychology (B.Sc. honours)
biology and statistics (B.Sc. honours)
