Biology explores living organisms, examining their composition, processes, development, beginnings, adaptation, and geographical spread. Among scientific disciplines, biology likely has the most direct impact on our daily lives. We constantly encounter biological subjects in media coverage and documentaries, from genetic modification and ecosystem protection to contamination, illness and immune responses, social dynamics, and demographic changes.
Our curriculum provides exceptional hands-on research experiences for undergraduates, both in the field and laboratory settings. Students can participate in diverse biological field courses at the Bonne Bay Marine Station adjacent to Gros Morne National Park, as well as in Terra Nova National Park in eastern Newfoundland and at Memorial University's Harlow Campus in England.
The biology program enables students to engage in laboratory research through initiatives like the Memorial Undergraduate Career Experience Program (MUCEP) and the NSERC Undergraduate Student Research Award (USRA) program.
Beyond standard major, minor and honours tracks in biology, we provide combined programs in:
biology and behavioural neuroscience (B.Sc. honours)
biochemistry and cell biology (B.Sc. honours)
biology and Earth sciences (B.Sc. honours)
biology and psychology (B.Sc. honours)
biology and statistics (B.Sc. honours)
