The Bachelor of Education (Primary/Elementary) as an initial degree is a 150-credit program tailored to train educators for kindergarten through sixth grade. This intensive, full-time professional program spans six semesters (three years) and incorporates school observation days along with a semester-long teaching internship.
Admission requirements for the Bachelor of Education (Primary/Elementary) as a first degree include completion of 60 credit hours (20 courses) with either a minimum 65% overall average or a 65% average in the most recent 30 credit hours (10 courses).
The prerequisite 60 credit hours (20 courses) must consist of:
12 credit hours in English, with at least six credits at the 2000-level or higher (excluding English as a Second Language courses)
6 credit hours in mathematics or 3 credit hours in calculus
6 credit hours in psychology
6 credit hours from two distinct science disciplines, including 3 credits with lab work (Chemistry 1900 may fulfill the lab requirement)
Eligible science fields include: biochemistry, biology, chemistry, earth sciences, environmental science, ocean sciences, and physics
6 credit hours from any mix of: anthropology, archaeology, economics, folklore, gender studies, geography, history, indigenous studies, linguistics, philosophy, political science, religious studies, or sociology
At least 18 credit hours in a single concentration area
Maximum of 6 credits at the 1000-level can count toward these requirements
Additional credits must come from non-education subjects
Duration: Five years total (Two years of prerequisite coursework plus three years in the B.Ed. program)
