To earn a Doctor of Philosophy in Engineering, students must develop and defend a thesis grounded in independent research. The program mandates either two 700-level half-courses beyond a Master's degree, or six half-courses (with at least five at the 700 level) beyond a Bachelor's degree. Half of these courses must carry the "MECHENG" designation in their codes.

PhD candidates must additionally pass a Comprehensive Examination assessing their broad understanding and capacity to connect concepts. The degree requires completion of an original research thesis demonstrating scholarly rigor, adhering to the university's thesis and oral defense standards.

Bachelor's degree holders should initially enroll in the Master's program. Exceptional students may transition directly to the PhD track at the discretion of both the Mechanical Engineering Department and the School of Graduate Studies (SGS). Full-time graduate students (excluding Industrial PhD candidates) must complete 8 sessions of MECH ENG 758 "Graduate Seminars in Mechanical Engineering." Additional information is available under MECHENG 758 in the course catalog.
