The McMaster MDPhD program welcomed its inaugural student in 2007, created to address the growing demand for clinician-scientists in Canada's healthcare research sector while involving McMaster's graduate programs and faculty in achieving this objective. These dual-trained professionals possess a sophisticated grasp of clinically significant patient issues and research techniques, uniquely positioning them to swiftly guide research initiatives toward solving urgent medical challenges and implementing discoveries in patient care. As a key route to becoming clinician-scientists, combined MDPhD training offers streamlined, cohesive education and has proven successful in cultivating productive medical researchers.

At the time McMaster University launched its MDPhD initiative, Ontario hosted just two such programs - the well-established University of Toronto offering and Western University's newer program. Currently, Ontario boasts five MDPhD programs (University of Toronto, McMaster University, Western University, Queen's University, and University of Ottawa), representing nearly half of Canada's total. McMaster currently enrolls three students annually. Initially, the program admitted qualified medical students to pursue dual degrees combining Medicine with PhDs in either Biochemistry or Medical Sciences. The program has since broadened its scope beyond these original options to include: Health Research Methodology, Health Policy, Neuroscience, Biomedical Engineering, and Chemical Biology.
