To become a teacher in Ontario's public school system, candidates must obtain a Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) from a higher education institution recognized by the Ontario College of Teachers. This credential opens doors to teaching positions not only across Canada but also internationally. Laurentian University's English School of Education stands among the select provincial institutions offering a concurrent B.Ed. program. Participants begin with a 4-year undergraduate degree while simultaneously completing education courses, workshops, and school placements throughout Ontario. The five-year concurrent program exposes students to diverse educational environments, helping them determine if teaching aligns with their career aspirations. Students who decide to withdraw can still graduate with their four-year bachelor's degree.
Concurrent education students at Laurentian must maintain at least a B average to progress to the Professional Year, alongside meeting all other program requirements. The English program within the Faculty of Education and HealthFaculté d’éducation et de la santé provides academic guidance through an undergraduate advisor and director. Our rigorous preparation ensures Professional Year graduates enter the teaching field with exceptional readiness.
