Lakehead University provides a cutting-edge Master of Social Work (MSW) program available at its Orillia and Thunder Bay campuses. The School of Social Work designed this MSW program to prepare advanced generalist practitioners for work with diverse populations across urban, rural, and northern settings. With intimate campus sizes and accessible faculty, students enjoy a supportive academic atmosphere. The program curriculum equips students with essential knowledge, ethics, and competencies for professional practice in varied contexts, including urban hubs, remote regions, Indigenous communities, and areas with limited services.
Lakehead's MSW program prioritizes advanced practice skills, typically developed through the project-based pathway. While all students initially enroll in the project track, those interested in research may transition to the thesis option after consulting faculty advisors and obtaining approval. The program's flexible structure enables personalized learning, allowing students to concentrate their coursework, fieldwork, and final project or thesis within a chosen specialization.
Through collaboration with five departments including Social Work, the Gerontology Program offers students an interdisciplinary educational approach. Participants benefit from diverse resources and cross-disciplinary collaboration opportunities. The program examines gerontological research and theory, requiring students to complete a thesis or major project with a focus on aging-related topics within their chosen department.
