Biotechnology is an interdisciplinary science that harnesses living systems and biological components to develop innovative products, address challenges, and enhance manufacturing techniques. Breakthroughs in science and technology have revolutionized biotechnological methods, enabling diverse applications across healthcare, environmental conservation, forestry, and industrial sectors. Lakehead University stands as a comprehensive institution renowned for its progressive academic offerings and pioneering research initiatives. The university's Ph.D. in Biotechnology is an interdisciplinary, research-intensive graduate program designed to cultivate scientific expertise in two specialized domains: Medical Biotechnology and Environmental Biotechnology, with particular emphasis on toxicology, waste management, and emissions control.
This flexible program enables students to select their specialization area and customize their research and curriculum to align with professional aspirations. With faculty drawn from diverse academic and industrial backgrounds, students can explore a broad spectrum of specialized training areas. Completing the Ph.D. in Biotechnology opens doors to career prospects in academic institutions, research centers, and biotech firms both within Canada and internationally.
Normally, an applicant to the Program would be expected to have completed a master’s degree in science, engineering, or an allied discipline. The academic program for each PhD candidate will be developed by the Supervisory Committee in consultation with the student.
Students in the first year of a master’s degree may apply for transfer into the PhD in Biotechnology provided that they have successfully completed one FCE of course work and have had their research proposal approved by their thesis committee.
