The discipline of Gender and Women's Studies has undergone significant evolution since its establishment at Lakehead University in 1990. Beyond exploring women's lived experiences and gender structures, you'll investigate diverse areas including: Sexual Identity, Queer Perspectives, Legal Frameworks, Male Identity Studies, Global Feminist Movements, Environmental Feminism, Equity Advocacy, Media Representations, and Bodily Autonomy. These subjects collectively aim to reveal how societal ideologies limit individuals and how such barriers can be overcome to achieve true parity. Our Women's Studies Department embraces a multidisciplinary feminist perspective, with distinguished faculty specializing in feminist jurisprudence, women's wellness, LGBTQ+ scholarship, and digital culture studies. Their expertise provides pathways into advanced programs like the Social Justice Master's degree, Canadian law schools, healthcare professions like midwifery, public safety careers, and numerous other fields.
Honours students in Women's Studies can pursue combined degrees with Gerontology, Psychology, History, English, Indigenous Studies, Sociology, Nature-Based Education, or Education programs, alongside specialized Social Work tracks.
Social Work represents a dynamic, impactful career path dedicated to societal betterment through policy development, support for vulnerable populations, therapeutic interventions, and community transformation initiatives. Lakehead's Social Work program offers a comprehensive bachelor's degree emphasizing northern community needs, grounded in integrated practice principles. The curriculum combines theoretical instruction with hands-on placements in diverse environments such as rehabilitation centers, mental health institutions, educational settings, and family service organizations, cultivating essential competencies in analytical reasoning, interpersonal communication, solution-focused practice, and collaborative teamwork.
