This Ontario College Certificate program equips students with the skills to deliver personal care and support services to individuals and families. Personal Support Workers perform duties such as aiding with household tasks, organizing social and recreational activities, and enhancing health and wellness for clients across all life stages.
The curriculum aligns with standards set by the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities, addressing the growing educational requirements for PSW graduates entering today's varied healthcare and social service sectors.
As unregulated healthcare providers, Personal Support Workers operate within care teams under the guidance of regulated professionals or supervisors, or alternatively, follow client directives in independent living environments.
Through this program, students earn a college certificate while gaining knowledge about self-care and client care across multiple environments, including hospital labs, simulated home settings, long-term care facilities, and community organizations.
Students complete four distinct placement opportunities, accumulating more than 400 clinical hours through SLC's PSW Program. These practical experiences prepare graduates with comprehensive, job-ready skills in PSW practice.
Additional certifications incorporated in the program include: Safe Food Handling, Gentle Persuasive Approach (for dementia care), St. Peter's Safe Feeding, and Abuse Prevention - all regularly updated to align with industry demands. Graduates may use this certificate to pursue nursing bridge programs for further education.
