Indigenous Learning is a multidisciplinary department that welcomes both Indigenous and non-Indigenous students. Drawing from fields like history, geography, anthropology, and sociology, this program explores social systems and Indigenous relationships with mainstream Canadian society.
Our curriculum seeks to deepen understanding of Indigenous cultures, lived experiences, and contemporary political concerns. Rather than taking a purely historical perspective, we emphasize present-day realities of Indigenous communities. Historical elements are studied through the lens of ongoing impacts, helping to correct misconceptions about Indigenous Peoples. Students will develop skills including archival research, census analysis, cultural competency, government document interpretation, critical analysis, and effective written/oral communication.
Our Indigenous Learning programs draw students from across Northwestern Ontario, Southern Ontario, Quebec, the U.S., and internationally from countries like Saudi Arabia and Norway. The program's emphasis on hands-on learning benefits from this diverse student body, creating rich classroom discussions and promoting intercultural understanding.
