The global tourism and travel industry ranks among the world's largest economic sectors. Despite the proliferation of online booking platforms, this rapidly evolving field continues to grow exponentially, creating unprecedented demand for skilled tourism professionals. Our two-year Ontario College Diploma co-op program equips students with both theoretical knowledge and practical skills for careers with tourism operators, travel agencies, airlines, tour operators, and various industry partners.
This comprehensive program spans four academic terms plus one paid co-op placement. Through diverse career-focused courses and real-world experience, students develop the competencies needed to thrive in this fast-paced industry, with particular emphasis on travel counseling. The curriculum prioritizes cultivating the interpersonal skills and professional attitudes essential for success in customer-facing roles. Key program components include travel consulting, sales techniques, airline ticketing, tour operations, business management, vacation packaging, and hospitality operations. Our tourism curriculum also covers global destinations, cutting-edge industry technology, plus essential skills in digital marketing, client relations, and social media strategy.
Students benefit from a mandatory 420-hour paid co-op placement and can participate in an optional seven-night Caribbean cruise field study, along with local industry tours and guest speaker sessions. The program culminates with a capstone project where teams develop and pitch a complete international tour package to industry evaluators. Additional leadership opportunities include participation in the Baxter Student Ambassador mentoring initiative.
For global exposure, students may pursue semester exchanges in Finland, Ireland, or the Netherlands, or leverage our articulation agreements with international institutions like Ireland's Limerick Institute of Technology. Developed in collaboration with the Association of Canadian Travel Agencies (ACTA), this program meets industry certification standards. Graduates must satisfy the Travel Industry Council of Ontario (TICO) educational requirements for retail travel professionals, with certification opportunities provided.
