The Sociology and Social Anthropology programs both require five credits, combining coursework with a thesis. Students can complete their Master's degree either through a 12-month full-time schedule or part-time (with identical degree requirements for both options).
Full-time students aiming to finish their MA within 12 months can achieve this goal, particularly if they opt for a thesis that doesn't involve fieldwork data collection or ethics approval (such as analyzing publicly available texts or datasets). Those who conduct fieldwork or collect original data typically require 18 to 24 months to complete their degree.
All students must maintain consistent communication with their committees throughout their studies, including during summer breaks.
Before arriving, each student receives a temporary advisor based on their submitted "Statement of Interest" (provided during the application process). This advisor assists with course selection and helps form the student's Area Program Committee, including its Chair. The committee is responsible for supervising the student's Area Essays Examination.
