A PhD in Epidemiology and Applied Health Research equips students with the essential skills to become autonomous researchers. The doctoral program starts with a year of independent study, followed by 12 credit hours of coursework, featuring a 6-credit core class titled "Epidemiology and Applied Health Research." Students will join seminars and collaborative discussions to strengthen their epidemiological expertise and applied research capabilities before taking their comprehensive exams. The curriculum includes career-building components such as practical fieldwork placements and specialized courses in Higher Education Teaching Methods. Each doctoral candidate must develop and defend a thesis proposal showcasing their ability to analyze existing literature, formulate focused research questions, and apply robust methodologies. The degree concludes with an oral defense presenting the candidate's original contribution to their field of study.
