Applied research in the social sciences focuses on addressing concrete issues by answering targeted questions. Unlike fundamental research that explores how things function, applied research generates knowledge with clear goals, often resulting in tangible outputs like products, processes, or services. The speed of innovation in applied research and knowledge dissemination is currently unprecedented. Professionals involved in applied research—whether planning projects, assessing outcomes, or adapting findings for policy decisions—drive meaningful change across diverse fields such as business, nonprofits, government, and education.
This graduate certificate equips students with practical research techniques, data analysis, visualization tools, and knowledge translation strategies to enhance research effectiveness. During the second term, participants collaborate in cross-disciplinary groups to apply their skills in a real-world research initiative. Beyond this experiential learning component, students can further develop professional competencies through an optional co-op placement.
