The Interdisciplinary Studies (IDIS) program spans multiple academic fields, allowing faculty from various graduate programs to contribute. As such, the IDIS Graduate Program invites all qualified faculty members to serve as supervisors.
Significant breakthroughs in knowledge and creativity often occur beyond traditional disciplinary boundaries. Innovation frequently emerges when we reduce, connect, or eliminate these boundaries entirely. The University of Northern British Columbia offers two pathways for interdisciplinary exploration.
The MA in Interdisciplinary Studies allows students in Humanities and Social Sciences to pursue academic growth beyond conventional disciplinary limits. Similarly, the MSc option provides Physical and Life Sciences students with opportunities to transcend traditional academic boundaries. Prospective students should contact the IDIS Program Chair for guidance on selecting the right option and designing a study plan aligned with their research goals.
The MA in Interdisciplinary Studies offers both coursework and thesis formats, with students typically starting in the course-based program. Those wishing to switch to thesis work may apply after completing 15 credit hours. The MSc program is exclusively thesis-based.
Both the MA (coursework or thesis) and MSc (thesis) programs require at least 27 credit hours and can generally be finished within two years.
