The MA in History program cultivates analytical thinkers equipped for modern challenges. Our department aims to develop skilled historians for academic and research positions while fostering a dedication to public service. Students can explore diverse historical periods and specialized topics, from legal systems and social structures to gender studies, mass violence, and global imperial networks. Faculty actively pursue cross-disciplinary research initiatives and welcome student involvement in projects spanning local, national, and global contexts. The program maintains strong partnerships with prestigious research centers including the Centre for Oral History and Digital Storytelling and the Montreal Institute for Genocide and Human Rights Studies. These connections provide opportunities to master oral history techniques, create innovative multimedia narratives, present research through creative formats, and participate in policy development and social advocacy initiatives.
The normal requirement for admission into the MA is an honours degree in history or its equivalent. Applicants should understand that admission is contingent on a sound undergraduate academic record, strong letters of reference, and a convincing statement of purpose which clearly describes their academic interest in the program and intended area of research. In addition, admission is contingent on the availability of an appropriate faculty member in the Department of History to serve as supervisor. Some applicants with deficiencies in their undergraduate preparation may be admitted into a qualifying year program.
