Every individual holds their own perspective on photography. While anyone can snap a picture, the craft is more complex than it appears. Beneath photography's widespread popularity lies a technically demanding art form with deep-rooted intellectual heritage.

Photography merges artistic vision with technological precision. As a photography student, you'll explore both digital and traditional film techniques. You'll master camera operations, darkroom processes for monochrome and color prints, along with digital imaging tools and output methods. Your coursework will provide: Historical and theoretical insights into the medium, Analytical frameworks for evaluating photographic work, Understanding of photography's cultural and artistic influence, Comprehensive knowledge for creating modern visual narratives.

Graduates emerge as skilled fine art photographers, capable of harnessing camera techniques for personal expression, developing cohesive portfolios, and applying their expertise across creative fields. Photography stands as a unique discipline with its own artistic legacy. This program acknowledges the varied formal and conceptual methods in today's photographic practice. Cegep Profile: No specific profile required. However, following a profile in the arts may help applicants build a successful portfolio.

Additional requirements

Applicants must submit the following directly to the Department of Studio Arts:

  • Letter of intent
  • Photocopy of your recent transcripts
  • Image list

Minimum Cut-off Averages: (Minimum Cut-off Averages should be used as indicators. Data may change depending on the quality of the application pool.)

  • Quebec Cegep (CRC): DEC
  • Canadian High Schools: 65% or C+
  • External Transfers: C
  • International Bacc. (IB): A minimum total of 27 points. Admission to competitive programs is based on strong portfolio/auditions and, normally, above-average grades.
  • Bacc. Francais: A minimum grade of 11/20 for students who have completed their Bacc. francais outside of Quebec. Admission is competitive and based on strong portfolio/auditions and, normally, above-average grades.

Admission to most programs is based on portfolio/audition evaluations as well as academic grades. Applicants selected for admission have normally achieved grades that exceed minimum requirements.

English language requirements: Direct Admission: TOEFL (paper-based) score between 540 and 576. Conditional Admission: TOEFL (paper-based) score between 505 and 539; MELAB minimum score of 74, 2 on speaking tests; CAEL minimum score of 50; CAE minimum score of C; CPE (advanced qualification for proficient users only) minimum score of C.
