Our graduate programs aim to cultivate the methodological and analytical abilities needed for advanced historical study. Students benefit from faculty expertise across diverse fields including Canadian History, Ancient and Medieval periods, Early Modern era, Modern Europe, the Atlantic world (with focus on Africa, the Caribbean and Latin America), South East Asia, and U.S. History. Beyond academics, students actively participate in departmental life through initiatives like the yearly Underhill Graduate Student Colloquium and social gatherings organized by the History Graduate Students' Association.

Qualification Requirements

The minimum requirement for admission to the master's program is an Honours bachelor's degree (or the equivalent) with at least high honours standing.

The Department offers no qualifying-year program, applicants with a three-year non-honours degree may be considered for admission into the fourth year of Carleton's B.A. (Honours) program.

IELTS - Overall 6.5 (minimum 6.0 in each band).
TOEFL iBT - 86 (20 in reading and listening, 22 in speaking and writing)
TOEFL PBT - overall score of 580.
