The joint master's program specializing in African Studies is tailored for Carleton University graduate students enrolled in eligible programs within the Faculties of Arts and Social Science, Public Affairs, and the Sprott School of Business. It offers an opportunity to enhance their education by gaining specialized knowledge in African Studies through cross-disciplinary engagement.

This partnership provides access to Canada's most focused expertise in African Studies. Located in Ottawa, students benefit from proximity to NGOs specializing in international development, human rights, and environmental issues, along with key federal agencies including Global Affairs Canada, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada, and Export Development Canada. Extensive archival resources are available at Library and Archives Canada. The city also hosts an expanding network of African-Canadian community organizations, African diplomatic missions, and university scholars specializing in African studies across three institutions.

Qualification Requirements

The normal minimum requirement for admission to the master's program is a B.A. Honours degree in a discipline involving the analysis of language or the study of language use or learning, or a 3 year B.A. in a relevant discipline together with a B.Ed. or C.T.E.S.L.

Students must have achieved a minimum of B+ in related courses and B overall in their academic work.

Relevant professional experience may also enhance a candidate's application.

IELTS - Overall 6.5 (minimum 6.0 in each band).
TOEFL iBT - 86 (20 in reading and listening, 22 in speaking and writing)
TOEFL PBT - overall score of 580.
