The Intelligent Systems and Data Science (ISDS) PhD is a research-focused program designed to cultivate expert scientists capable of addressing complex problems in artificial intelligence & machine learning, integrated smart systems, contemporary software systems, statistical-mathematical modeling & analytics, and large-scale data infrastructure.
Our ISDS doctoral program stands out for several key reasons:
Its specialized degree title and concentration areas are unparalleled across Ontario and Canada.
This cross-disciplinary program explicitly recognizes the essential connection between computer science, mathematics, and statistics.
The curriculum aims to build a unified interdisciplinary program and student community.
The qualifying process includes crafting a research grant proposal, providing students with valuable experience in funding application development.
Participants gain hands-on experience creating and implementing sophisticated AI algorithms, intricate software systems, data analysis tools, and statistical frameworks.
There are three ways in which students may be admitted: (i) Students holding an MSc in Computer Science, Mathematics, Statistics, or a closely related discipline with a minimum 80% overall average from an accredited institution. (ii) Students currently in the MSc program may apply to transfer into the PhD program after one year of study if they have completed the required number of courses in their program with an average of at least 80% and have shown significant research progress as determined by their supervisory committee and graduate program committee. (iii) In exceptional cases, students may be admitted into the PhD program with a four-year Honours Bachelor's degree, or the equivalent, with an overall average of at least an 85%. These students must demonstrate high research potential adjudicated by the graduate program committee.
