This combined theoretical and hands-on program provides insights into children, adolescents, and youth by examining: diversity, social disparities, special needs, family structures, cultural backgrounds, social environments, educational settings, peer relationships, community influences, media and pop culture, and global concerns. This comprehensive foundation creates opportunities for diverse career paths involving youth.
Explore childhood and adolescence through multiple perspectives. Our distinctive curriculum incorporates psychology, education, sociology, anthropology, cultural studies, and criminology – along with other fields – to develop a deep understanding of young individuals and their viewpoints.
The Child and Youth Studies Department (CHYS) provides four-year BA Honours or BA Major programs, a three-year BA degree, and a combined BA (Honours)/BEd (Primary-Junior) program. These interdisciplinary programs blend theoretical knowledge with practical applications regarding children and youth across various contexts including culture, economics, legal systems, family life, schools, peer groups, and communities. Drawing from psychology, sociology, anthropology, criminology, education, and cultural studies, the program synthesizes different approaches to foster a holistic understanding of childhood and youth development.
Applicants must have
Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD);
Minimum six Grade 12 4U or 4M-level credits, including program specific prerequisites.
A minimum admission average of 70% (many programs require a higher average)

IELTS - overall 6.5, no band below 6.0
TOEFL - overall 88, no band below 21
CAEL - overall 70, no band below 60
PTE - 58
IELP Level 5 - Successful completion of Level 5 of the Brock Intensive English Language program
CAE (C1 Advanced): 176 minimum score
CPE (C2 Proficiency): 176 minimum score
