This combined theoretical and hands-on program provides a comprehensive framework for exploring childhood and adolescence, encompassing: diverse backgrounds, socioeconomic disparities, special needs, family structures, cultural influences, social environments, educational settings, peer relationships, local communities, media influences, and global concerns. This extensive foundation creates opportunities for engaging with young individuals across multiple professional contexts.
Examine concepts of childhood and youth through interdisciplinary perspectives. Our distinctive curriculum incorporates insights from psychology, education, sociology, anthropology, cultural studies, and criminology – along with other fields – to develop a nuanced understanding of young people and their worldviews.
The Child and Youth Studies Department (CHYS) provides four-year Honours BA and Major BA programs, a three-year BA degree, and a combined BA (Honours)/BEd (Primary-Junior) program. These interdisciplinary programs blend theoretical knowledge with practical applications, examining children and adolescents within cultural, economic, legal, familial, educational, social, and community contexts. Drawing from psychology, sociology, anthropology, criminology, education, and cultural studies, our academic approach synthesizes multiple disciplines to foster a holistic understanding of childhood and youth development.
