Algoma University stands as Canada's sole institution providing a three-year bachelor's program in Anishinaabemowin, the Ojibwe language. Like many indigenous tongues globally, Anishinaabemowin confronts the threat of disappearing. Traditionally, knowledge of this language was shared orally from elders to youth, though this practice has evolved in modern times. The survival of the language now depends on younger learners mastering it and transmitting it to coming generations. By choosing to study Anishinaabemowin, you can play a vital role in preserving this foundational Canadian indigenous language.

Our curriculum delivers comprehensive training in Ojibwe language and cultural studies, ranging from beginner to expert levels. Participants develop practical fluency while exploring the complexities introduced by written documentation. The program facilitates both individual and group analysis of Anishinaabe social frameworks and belief systems, alongside deep dives into their philosophical perspectives. Through studying both oral traditions and recorded history, learners master Anishinaabemowin's grammatical structure and phonetics via diverse writing assignments. Additionally, students engage with Anishinaabe musical traditions, community advocacy efforts, and the cultural variations present among Anishinaabe communities nationwide.
