Our Honours and Bachelor of Arts programs are structured to provide increasingly focused exploration of English literature and Cultural Studies as you advance through each academic level, typically in more intimate class settings.
At Level I, we provide various courses aimed at enhancing your writing skills and introducing the principles of literary and cultural analysis. Options include ENGLISH 1F03 (The Written World), ENGLISH 1G03 (Making and Unmaking Literary Traditions), and ENGLISH 1H03 (Words in Place), which examine diverse literary works and their societal impacts. Additionally, ENGLISH 1CS3 (Studying Culture: A Critical Introduction) cultivates analytical thinking about cultural expressions across media, institutions, and daily life.
Level II and III courses expand your knowledge of key developments in Cultural Studies and English literary traditions. These include specialized studies of specific writers, genres, historical periods, or national literatures—from Shakespeare to Canadian works—as well as thematic explorations covering Elizabethan eras, pop culture, Indigenous futurisms, and community-based literary practicums.
For Level IV Honours students, we offer seminar-style courses featuring weekly discussions that encourage deep engagement with specialized subjects. These small-group sessions enable close collaboration with professors on focused topics. Recent seminar offerings have included "Even Stranger Things: The Early Gothic," "Renaissance Power Dynamics in Literature," "Bollywood and Global Cinema," "Digital Culture Studies," and "Canadian Graphic Narratives."
