The Peace and Development Studies program focuses on approaches to advancing peace, human rights, and sustainable practices. This field critically examines power imbalances and unequal opportunities that contribute to global and local tensions, societal disruptions, and ecological harm.
Learners will explore systemic roots of racial and gender-based violence, environmental emergencies, displacement, economic hardship, competition over resources, and disparities between generations. Interconnected solutions encompass community empowerment, ecological sustainability, positive growth initiatives, conflict resolution, and reconciliation efforts. These approaches demand knowledge of frameworks and techniques for recognizing, evaluating, and addressing disputes and environmental damage. The program also evaluates the limitations and underlying premises of conventional development models.
Participants will apply social theories across disciplines and practical contexts, operating at community, national, and global scales. The curriculum covers three key areas: 1) systemic inequity, fairness, and fundamental freedoms; 2) sustainable progress; 3) conflict resolution and crisis intervention strategies.
