The Master of Philosophy program consists of 24 credit points of coursework alongside a 72-credit point thesis. Academic departments may grant advanced standing for coursework and will determine the suitable entry level.
This program enables students to conduct a significant research project that aims to make a meaningful contribution to the discipline. Except for pursuing a PhD, the MPhil represents the most research-focused program available in Earth and Environmental Sciences. The coursework element is tailored to support the research thesis by permitting candidates to choose subjects directly relevant to their research focus.
The thesis can explore any area within Earth or Environmental Sciences considered appropriate for the degree. Potential research areas include Quaternary studies and paleoclimate, early Earth evolution, Geophysics, Sedimentary Basin Analysis, Geochronology, coastal landscape transformations, Geochemistry and mineralogy, Structural or Economic Geology, Earth system modeling and change, terrestrial, marine or atmospheric processes, Archaeology, climate change, and environmental systems management.
Honours degree with 2nd class Division 2 or higher, coursework Masters with WAM 60+ or GPA of 2.8 out of 4.
Candidates with a Coursework Masters degree or a 4-year Bachelor Honours degree in the same discipline may be granted up to 24 credit points of advanced standing for the coursework component of the Master of Philosophy.
