Indigenous Studies examines the debates, intricacies, and paradoxes that define Indigenous identity in modern Australia and globally. Today's Indigenous Australia represents a compelling intersection of heritage, tradition, authority, and governance. The field encompasses practical concerns, political matters, and the examination of their interconnectedness.
At UOW, Indigenous Studies prepares students to critically analyze issues affecting Indigenous peoples and communities locally, nationally, and internationally. The program emphasizes cultural, political, economic, and social influences that have historically shaped, and continue to impact, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. This understanding is enhanced through comparative studies of worldwide Indigenous experiences and collaboration with diverse Indigenous viewpoints and organizations globally. The major includes four foundational courses covering Indigenous Australia, key concepts, international viewpoints, and research approaches.
