With over a billion native speakers, Mandarin holds the distinction of being the world's most widely spoken language. China's rich 5,000-year cultural legacy and its position as the globe's fastest-expanding economy make it increasingly influential. As China strengthens its cultural and economic ties with neighboring nations, proficiency in Chinese has become highly sought-after. This UOW program caters to students familiar with Chinese characters who either speak regional dialects like Shanghainese, Cantonese, or Taiwanese without Mandarin fluency, or those seeking to enhance their Mandarin abilities.
Through UOW's curriculum, you'll explore Mandarin linguistics, grammatical structures, and China's cultural evolution. The program adopts a comparative language approach, enabling you to communicate effectively in both spoken and written Mandarin across diverse contexts, from social interactions to international commerce. By examining films, poetry, and cultural artifacts, you'll develop the ability to critically assess cultural differences between Chinese traditions and your own background.
Foundational courses will first establish conversational Mandarin skills before progressing to advanced language mastery, while specialized subjects cover Chinese cultural heritage, modern historical developments, and contemporary Chinese society.
