The Master of Laboratory Medicine program equips students with both theoretical knowledge and hands-on expertise required for careers as Medical Laboratory Scientists in pathology labs or other diagnostic facilities (through the Professional Experience track) while also offering valuable research exposure (via the Research track). This degree serves as a formal certification in Laboratory Medicine for graduates with backgrounds in science or health sciences. The program offers research experience and may serve as a stepping stone toward advanced research degrees. Those selecting the Professional Experience track will complete their practical training in New South Wales laboratories. Participants will develop expertise across key Laboratory Medicine disciplines including clinical chemistry, endocrinology, haematology, transfusion science, histopathology, medical microbiology, molecular biology, and immunology. Medical Scientists perform essential lab tests that aid in disease diagnosis and treatment. Upon completing required practical experience, graduates may qualify to take the Australian Institute of Medical Scientists membership exam. Career opportunities for biomedical and medical lab scientists span hospital labs, private pathology services, blood banks, veterinary diagnostics, public health facilities, academic institutions, and diagnostic companies.
