Globally, more than 160,000 protected areas exist with the primary purpose of safeguarding nature's long-term preservation alongside related ecosystem benefits and cultural heritage. Effective planning is crucial for these protected areas to fulfill their conservation objectives. This program provides learners with essential planning competencies needed in today's protected area management. It explores planning approaches across governmental, private, and community-managed conservation zones. Developed as part of an effort to create a dedicated protected area education and research hub, this course results from collaboration between multiple institutions including The University of Tasmania, various parks services, conservation organizations, and academic partners. Upon finishing, participants will gain capabilities to: evaluate and participate in conservation site selection processes; develop planning frameworks that enable adaptive management; create comprehensive protected area management strategies; design community participation initiatives; and apply theoretical planning principles to practical conservation planning.
Candidates for the Graduate Certificate of Protected Area Planning shall be qualified for entry if they hold an undergraduate degree or other tertiary qualification(s) deemed by the Faculty to be equivalent for this purpose.
