As we enter the Asian Century, comprehending this dynamic region becomes crucial for shaping what lies ahead. Grasping Asia's complexities requires building knowledge of its foundational civilizations alongside contemporary cultural and societal developments.
This program explores key cultural, historical, social, and political themes, including ethnic diversity and migration patterns; dominant religious and philosophical systems (especially Hinduism, Buddhism, Confucianism, and Islam); cross-regional influences like economic and political interactions between Asia and other regions (such as various imperialist structures); significant 20th and 21st century political movements and their impacts (including nationalism, revolutions, authoritarian regimes, and democratic transitions); and popular culture phenomena (from manga to K-Pop). These topics are examined primarily through the lens of China, Japan, Korea, Southeast Asia, and South Asia.
Delivered entirely in English, Asian Studies incorporates the latest research from our faculty scholars. While language courses don't count toward this major, we highly recommend pairing Asian Studies with an Asian language program for deeper regional understanding.
