The Japanese Studies specialization helps students achieve advanced proficiency in modern Japanese while exploring Japan's rich society and cultural heritage. Instruction comes from passionate educators specializing in various aspects of Japanese culture, including educational sociology, minority studies, gender issues, literature, and contemporary culture. With Japanese being a key language offering in Australian education, graduates have pursued rewarding careers in teaching, hospitality, diplomacy, public service, international commerce, media, tourism, and translation across both Japan and Australia. Students are strongly encouraged to undertake exchange programs (for one or two semesters) at any of La Trobe's twelve partner Japanese universities. The program accommodates all proficiency levels, from complete beginners to advanced speakers, with potential placement assessments to determine appropriate entry points.
