Speech therapists assist individuals of all ages facing communication or swallowing challenges due to medical conditions, injuries, or disabilities. These professionals can find employment across various educational and healthcare settings. The University of Melbourne's Department of Audiology and Speech Pathology provides a two-year full-time Master of Speech Pathology program, preparing graduates for professional practice. The initial year covers foundational sciences including anatomy, physiology, phonetics, linguistics, and introduces clinical approaches to speech and language disorders. The second year advances this specialized knowledge, hones clinical abilities, and explores research methodologies. Speech therapists may practice independently or collaborate within multidisciplinary teams alongside physiotherapists, doctors, audiologists, and other specialists. This career path particularly suits those with scientific or linguistic interests who enjoy working directly with people.
The program combines traditional classroom instruction, seminars, hands-on practice, and student presentations with extensive clinical training. Participants complete about 400 supervised clinical hours across diverse healthcare and educational institutions throughout Victoria, including both urban and regional locations. Clinical rotations occur concurrently with academic coursework during semesters, supplemented by intensive placement blocks during breaks.
