Pursuing a Classics and Ancient History major allows you to explore the Greek and Roman civilizations, spanning from the Mediterranean to distant lands like Britain and Persia. You'll examine how later societies interpreted classical Greece and Rome through literature, art, and popular culture, while discovering their lasting impact on political systems, artistic expressions, and modern languages. This program reveals how classical mythology shapes contemporary superhero narratives and psychological concepts, while ancient empires and institutions like slavery have influenced both revolutionary movements and authoritarian regimes. Course offerings cover diverse topics including gladiatorial combat, legendary heroes, funerary practices, and the histories, myths, languages, arts, and social structures of Greece and Rome. Beyond studying ancient texts, you'll develop skills to critically evaluate modern media portrayals of antiquity, gaining insights into warfare, gender dynamics, social hierarchies, and cultural identity in ancient societies. Graduating from this program provides comprehensive knowledge of the classical world and its enduring significance throughout history and in modern times.
