Security science is a field grounded in empirical research, aiming to systematically describe, examine, understand, and address security threats and malicious activities with rigorous objectivity.
The university's excellence in security science has gained global recognition, with faculty members in the School of Science teaching students how to apply scientific principles and methodologies to identify, assess, and resolve security challenges based on verifiable data. The School's research initiatives in security science contribute to expanding the field's knowledge base through evidence-based findings. ECU's security science research focuses on key areas including: Risk Management, Resilience Strategies, Intelligence Operations, Cyber-Physical Security Integration, Security Technologies, Corporate Protection, Community Safety and Crime Reduction, Surveillance Systems, Security Education, as well as Terrorism and Extremism Studies. Research projects within these domains are tailored in collaboration with academic advisors. The School boasts specialized facilities such as a dedicated security science lab to support research efforts, while prioritizing partnerships with industry leaders and government organizations to elevate graduate research quality and student learning experiences.

Qualification Requirements
The following course-specific admission requirements are mandatory and must be satisfied by all applicants. These requirements are in addition to or supersede the minimum requirements outlined within the Academic admission requirements band section below.
All applicants are required to have the equivalent of 6 months full time research (which must involve a research output which includes the conception and design of the project, and analysis and interpretation of findings) if applying with a Masters qualification other than a Master by Research.
Applicants seeking online study will be required to provide additional information to support their application, as not all projects nor disciplines are suited to online study.
Special entry may be considered for applications to the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA) who will be required to attend an audition and/or interview.

Academic admission requirements (Band 11) may be satisfied through completion of one of the following:
Masters Degree (Research), or
Bachelor Honours Degree (First or Upper Second class), or
Demonstrated capacity to undertake original PhD-level research.
It is desirable that all applicants contact a potential supervisor to discuss their research project before applying. Information about ECU's Research Institutions, Centres and Supervisors can be found in the school brochures listed on the 'Applying for a Research Degree website or the staff contact page of the relevant School.
IELTS Academic Overall band minimum score of 6.5 (no individual band less than 6.0),
TOEFL iBT or TOEFL iBT Special Home Edition - Minimum score of 84, with no individual score less than 17.
