ECU's Medical Science research focuses on key areas including Neuroscience (specializing in Alzheimer's and Huntington's diseases), Cancer (with a strong emphasis on Melanoma), Reproductive Biology, and Evolutionary Biology.
Postgraduate research topics are tailored in collaboration with the coordinator or potential supervisor. We especially welcome applications from those interested in: Genetic and epigenetic factors in Alzheimer’s; Early detection and prevention of Alzheimer’s; Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART); Reproductive health and pregnancy; Blood-based cancer biomarkers for Melanoma and other cancers; Family and intergenerational health; Suboptimal health and Glycomics. Current research projects explore genetic influences on Alzheimer's progression, lifestyle factors in disease prevention, and biomarker studies. Additional work includes developing blood-based diagnostic tools for melanoma and other cancers, as well as type 2 diabetes biomarkers. Researchers also participate in the Busselton Healthy Ageing Study, e-health initiatives for dementia, enhancing ART success rates, studying fetal and placental development, examining grandparents' role in family health, and applying evolutionary principles to medicine. The School features dedicated medical science labs and a specialized neuroscience facility, all equipped with cutting-edge technology.
