Globally, Korean has become the most rapidly expanding language for learners outside its native speaking population, fueled by the worldwide fascination with K-pop and Korean television dramas. In Australia, Korean studies have gained significant traction over the last ten years as both a linguistic and cultural discipline, while ties between Korea and Australia continue strengthening across economic, political, and intercultural spheres. Consequently, professionals with expertise in Korean studies are increasingly sought after.

This program immerses students in Korea's rich society, traditions, historical developments, governance, and global interactions while building advanced Korean language proficiency. Participants will examine compelling sociocultural phenomena across the Korean peninsula, from inter-Korean relations to the global phenomenon of Hallyu - the explosive popularity of South Korean cultural exports.

The curriculum offers a transformative educational approach, equipping students to thrive in multicultural professional settings - an essential capability in our increasingly interconnected world. Language acquisition emphasizes practical, interactive classroom experiences focused on real-world communication skills development.

No previous Korean or Asian language experience is required for this major, offered within the Bachelor of Arts degree. Students can expand their expertise by pairing it with a secondary major, elective units, or specialized coursework aligned with their career aspirations.
