This five-year combined degree provides a thorough and adaptable education, qualifying graduates as accredited social workers while offering the flexibility to complement the Bachelor of Social Work with additional majors or minors. While requiring either a Sociology major/minor or Social Policy minor, students can select other focus areas like diversity studies, gender studies, Indigenous studies, or philosophy. The curriculum integrates social sciences, social policy, and social work theory with a focus on Australian and international welfare systems. The final two years feature a professional program including two supervised fieldwork placements in diverse settings, designed to develop competencies meeting AASW Practice Standards from foundational to professional levels.

Marking its centennial in 2017, our Japanese Studies Department ranks among the oldest in English-speaking institutions. This major provides Japanese language training and cultural studies, equipping students for engagement in our globalized society.

Through extensive partnerships with Japanese universities, students can participate in immersive exchange programs to refine their linguistic and intercultural abilities.

Cultural courses utilize authentic materials to explore Japan's historical and contemporary aspects across disciplines including literature, history, and modern pop culture.

Beginners achieve basic Japanese literacy and conversational skills, while advanced students attain near-fluent proficiency by graduation.

Students progress through tailored pathways in the unit tables based on their language proficiency. All pathways lead to a Japanese Studies major qualification.

Placement is determined by HSC/IB results or individual assessment. Prospective students uncertain about their level should consult the Department for guidance.

The Senior Intermediate pathway suits HSC continuers scoring 70+ or Extension students below 75.
