Students scoring 70% or higher in first-year Korean language courses are advised to consider an honors program in Korean Studies.
To qualify for honors, students must complete the major with a minimum 70% average, including ASNS3690 Approaches to Research in Asian Studies. Prospective honors candidates should meet with the course coordinator early in their studies.
The honors year serves as a foundation for academic or research careers, combining seminar coursework with an independent research thesis supervised by a field expert.
Honors programs vary in structure - some feature three seminars with a 12,000-15,000 word thesis, while others include two seminars with a longer thesis (up to 20,000 words). Seminar assessments are conducted by the instructor, sometimes with additional faculty review. Theses are evaluated by at least two field specialists besides the supervisor, who provide detailed feedback and preliminary grades.
Final thesis grades are determined collectively by department faculty. All honors candidates are ranked based on their thesis and seminar performance, with these rankings and University Medal nominations reviewed by the Faculty Honours Board comprising honors coordinators from across the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences.
