In this era dominated by Asia's rise, comprehending the region has become crucial for what lies ahead. Grasping Asia's complexities requires building knowledge of its foundational civilizations alongside modern cultural and societal dynamics.
This program highlights key cultural, historical, social and political developments, covering topics like ethnic diversity and migration patterns; dominant religious and philosophical systems (especially Hinduism, Buddhism, Confucianism and Islam); cross-regional influences including Asia's economic and political ties globally (such as imperialist structures); significant 20th and 21st century movements and their impacts (including nationalism, revolutions, authoritarian regimes, and democratic transitions); and widespread cultural phenomena (from manga to K-Pop). These subjects are explored primarily through the lens of China, Japan, Korea, Southeast Asia and South Asia.
The Asian Studies curriculum, conducted entirely in English, incorporates pioneering research from our faculty. While language courses don't contribute to the major requirements, students are highly advised to complement their studies with Asian language acquisition alongside Asian Studies coursework.
