The Ancient History program centers on two pivotal civilizations of the ancient Mediterranean world: Greece and Rome. These societies have profoundly shaped modern thought and institutions - Greece pioneered democracy, philosophy, and scientific inquiry, while Rome's enduring impact is evident in contemporary legal systems, public speaking, city planning, and global diplomacy. Though Western traditions often trace their roots to these ancient cultures, they also presented strikingly unfamiliar ways of life. First-year Ancient History coursework immerses students in Greek and Roman political systems, cultural practices, and mythological traditions while developing skills in analyzing translated primary sources. Advanced courses explore diverse historical periods, examining themes like governance, military conflicts, social structures, economic systems, and artistic expressions across these influential civilizations.
