Paleontology focuses on studying fossils - the preserved traces of ancient life. These remnants are essential, as the foundational concepts of evolutionary theory in modern biology rely heavily on fossil evidence.
Scientists in this field apply evolutionary principles to reconstruct Earth's remarkable biological history. By examining fossil records, they reveal hidden truths about life's transformation across millennia, trace connections between organisms, reconstruct ancient environments, and gain wisdom from prehistoric occurrences. Such understanding proves vital for both human survival and planetary health.
Addressing future global challenges requires deep comprehension of Earth's 4.5-billion-year geological and biological systems.
Our Evolutionary Biology and Paleontology Bachelor of Science program employs evolutionary frameworks to investigate life's diversification through geological ages. What evolutionary lessons emerge from mass extinction events? How do fossils reveal patterns of evolutionary change? What consequences arise from human interactions with other species?
Gain interdisciplinary training in biological and geological sciences, mastering techniques to decode ancient life's preserved messages. Collaborate with research teams in both lab and field environments. Field expeditions will enhance your physical endurance, problem-solving abilities, and flexibility - crucial skills for scientific practice.
Explore genetic principles, anatomical comparisons, and ecological systems. Analyze authentic fossil specimens. Discover how paleontological research informs modern concerns including conservation strategies, climatic shifts, and sustainable development.
Graduates emerge with comprehensive scientific training, prepared for professional biology careers or advanced paleontological specialization.
To be eligible for admission, an applicant must have achieved at least one of the following minimum entry requirements and demonstrate that they fulfill any prerequisite and essential criteria for admission: Recent secondary education (Year 12) Completion of a secondary education qualification equivalent to the South Australian Certificate of Education (SACE). Vocational Education and Training (VET) Completion of an award from a registered training organisation (RTO) at Certificate IV (AQF level 4) or higher. Higher education study Successful completion of at least 6 months full-time study (or equivalent part-time) of an undergraduate certificate (AQF level 5) or higher qualification from a recognised higher education institution.
